Remembering Jessica

   Today, February 9th, would have been Jessica's 36th birthday. I am sure she is with all of us in spirit, so in her honor, please reach out to someone today, say a kind word, listen with your heart, reach out a hand, or just make someone smile. That is a gift she would cherish!
   Jess learned (and taught) so much in her short life, but most of all she learned to be understanding, empathetic, non-judgemental, and above all LOVING! She had a radiant smile, a contagious laugh, and an open heart. I am sure she is a beautiful angel.
   I am attaching two links to this blog today, one is a video of her trip to Paris. She so enjoyed herself on that trip and the pictures reflect it. The other is a video we shared with friends and family at her "Celebration of Life" I hope you enjoy them.

Jessica has been gone for just over a month, but I don't believe we ever really die, we merely change form and our soul and our love continue on forever. I am so happy to say that I hear stories every day of how her loving presence is still among us, through dreams, memories, inspiration and signs.
I was blessed to have met so many wonderful people through her, people that opened their hearts and shared their love unconditionally. Thank you to everyone who posted messages of support and encouragement on this blog. You have no idea how much the love that was expressed continues to expand...like the ripples in a pond. New relationships were formed between some her friends and family members that would never have met otherwise. I still receive cards, emails and calls from people with stories about her, stories that I have never heard, but that warm my heart. The words "thank you" seem insufficient; all I can say is that I am truly blessed to have met (virtually or otherwise) each and every one of you. I wish you love today and always.

The dictionary version of victory:

Victory-[vik-tuh-ree, vik-tree] –noun, plural-ries.

1.a success or triumph over an enemy in battle or war.

2. an engagement ending in such triumph: American victories in the Pacific were won at great cost.

3. the ultimate and decisive superiority in any battle or contest: The new vaccine effected a victory over poliomyelitis.

4. a success or superior position achieved against any opponent, opposition, difficulty, etc.: a moral victory.

I believe, however, that true victory is not necessarily emerging triumphant over what we battle against, but rather in truly expressing what we stand for - LOVE.

With this definition in mind, Jessica did achieve victory. She used her short but meaningful life to both learn and teach. Now I understand the saying, “Only the good die young.” On October 15^th at 9:33pm, at the young age of 35, Jessica became one of God’s loving angels.

I have been so honored and privileged to watch her evolve. She touched so many with her gentle, loving and kind ways. Although she is no longer with us physically, she will always be with us in spirit, to guide us, to watch over us and to whisper lovingly to our intuitive side.

I would like to thank everyone who touched her life, supported and encouraged her, and stood by her and loved her. She was so deeply touched by the outpouring of love you all showed through your calls, cards, gifts, and messages. Your love was the most meaningful part of her journey.

When I asked her what she would like her legacy to be she said “to feed the homeless” something she quietly did herself. So, if you want to honor Jessica and help her to continue to be victorious, please help the less fortunate whenever and however you can. When you see someone down and out, don’t judge them, instead be empathetic. Put yourself in their shoes, even for the briefest of moments, then quietly reach into your heart and your pocket and pay it forward. It is one hand reaching out to pull up another that helps us all to ascend. God Bless.

Letting Go With Love

You know how they say, no news is good news? Well, that is not always true. I have not posted in a while because I didn't quite know what to say. Jessica has been having a difficult time lately. I know she would not want me to go into detail, so I won't. What I will do, however, is ask that you continue to keep her in your prayers and send positive energy her way. She sends everyone her love and misses you more than you will ever know. Your unending support and outpouring of love have touched her deeply. As her Mom, I thank each and every one of you for so lovingly supporting my beautiful daughter. You have no idea how much your loving and encouraging comments mean to both of us.

Back from Paris

We are back from Paris and we had an amazing trip of a lifetime!!! I want to thank everyone for all of their well wishes and positive energy and prayers you sent me leading up to the trip. The couple of weeks leading into it were rough and not exactly what I had intended before heading out, but it's remarkable how the knowledge of knowing I'd be in Paris soon can rally one's energy come go-time! We got to see the sights of the Louvre, Musee D'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, etc but we also included some relaxing time of hanging out in parks picnicking and dining leisurely at cafe's and bistros. The hotel we stayed in was gorgeous and we could see up the road to the Seine (and Hemingway had even frequented it in his day!) It was an adventure to say the least and I am eternally grateful to my cousin Michael and his business partners for making it possible. They are reminders that angels truly do live among us. It was such a great experience to be able to go immerse myself in another culture for awhile and just *escape*. I didn't want it to end, but I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity for such a journey...and to be able to take it with Dave, who has been supportive of me beyond words and throughout EVERYTHING was indescribably wondrous.

Another special thanks to my Mother...whom I never would have been able to go on this trip without. She packed and shopped and prepared everything for me when my energy tank was on empty. She is simply an amazing Mother and human being. And my step-dad, Art, who arranged limo service there and back was such great book-ends to a fabulous trip. I could go on and on thanking everyone so I will just say I am blessed to have all of you in my life.

Jess is going to Paris!

Whew! Jess is rounding the corner. As is true in this world of duality, the past few weeks have been a blend of positives and negatives.

On the positive side, a very generous & humble (so no names will not be mentioned) family member and his business partners offered to send Jessica on a trip anywhere in the world while she was off chemotherapy and feeling really good. She chose Paris, a long time dream! How exciting right?
Well, naturally they wanted her doctor's approval to travel. As it turns out, at the very same time her platelet level was high enough for another treatment with a new protocol (Folfiri). The Doctor said he would approve international travel provided she have a treatment before she went.

On the negative side, the treatment was horrific. It broke my heart to see her so sick and so depleted. That was a week ago and she is just now starting to come around. Yesterday she saw her Acupuncturist. He is wonderful and she always feels better after seeing him. Later that afternoon she saw her Homeopath who is also terrific and really helps her to work with her own healing energies.

Going forward, Regaining Strength, Shopping, Packing and Living Life to the Fullest in Paris!!!

Our heartfelt thanks to the very loving, generous and caring people that are making this dream come true. They are truly "Angels Among Us!"

Relay for Life 2010

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all of your donations and support. I am so touched by everyone's generosity. It really made me feel so loved by all of you and I am so glad that TOGETHER we were able to be so successful in our fundraising efforts. The luminaria ceremony was beautiful and emotional. It was a powerful testament to those who have had to go through this battle, whether it be they themselves or someone they love. Unfortunately, there are way too many people who fall into that category. So I once again humbly say Thank You to all who have helped me this past year. Just reading this blog is a show of support.

Relay for Life this Weekend!!!

I just love this picture ~ Last week, Jessica's friend Hal drove all the way here from Charlotte NC just to see her and take her to lunch! It was a beautiful day and they spent the afternoon at a favorite restaurant on the water. The visit really boosted her spirits!

She went for bloodwork today and although her platelets really rallied they are still not high enough for treatment, so it bought her time before having to make treatment decisions.

This weekend she will be walking the Survivor lap in the Relay for Life! It is a 2 day event with team and individual participants and they really go all out. We would both like to thank you so much for supporting her with your generous donations. I have posted a link to the site below. Platelets Dropped Again - Time for a break!

Jessica's platelets dropped a bit more this week so the she will be taking a two week break before checking them again. Shannon was here from Sunday - Thursday and it was great seeing the "Soul Sistas" together again. Her moral support always buoys us all, especially when treatment decisions need to be made. No Treatment Today - Platelets dropped again

Jess was unable to resume treatment again because her platelets dropped a bit lower. The oncologist wants to change protocol and put her on a drug called Irinotecan and 5 FU also referred to as “FOLFIRI.”

At this point, she is investigating all her options.Whenever we leave the office, read the material we were given, and begin to investigate, we have a list of new questions for the doctor. The “head-scratcher” at this point is that, for the most part, she is asymptomatic but the treatments are debilitating! Good week/Bad week is getting frustrating to say the least. We will keep you posted….

On a good note though, she looks as beautiful as ever and is really looking forward to a visit from her sister Shannon this week.

No Treatment Today-Platelets too low

Treatment has been postponed this week because Jessica's platelets were too low. This interferes with plans since Jess tries to schedule all other appointments, visits etc around this bi-weekly schedule. Oh well, the best laid plans of mice and men...

PET Scan not what we hoped - Round 18 starts today

Unfortunately the PET Scan didn't reveal the results we had hoped for. Jess in not a candidate for Radio-surgery at this time because a few new "small" nodules appeared in the lungs. They are not "lighting up" on the PET scan, but are a cause for cautious concern and she will resume with a modified protocol of chemotherapy. We are at the Oncology Clinic now. She has called for a Reiki session and a reflexology massage to put her in a relaxed state. A dear friend came up for the weekend prior to today's appointment and she had a wonderful time. As always, she is smiling and optimistic and I love her dearly!

Round 17 is over - Pet Scan April 15th

Round 17 is over and Jess is recuperating. She went into it feeling very good. Her long time friend, Lori, came up for a long weekend and spent Easter with us. The weather was perfect (mid 70's) and they had a great time catching up and celebrating the holiday. April 15th is her PET Scan so please keep her in prayer for the best possible results! Oh and THANK YOU all so much for your generous support of Jessica in the "Relay for Life." She has exceeded her goal and is continuing to raise funds for the cause.

Platelets Up - Round 16 Underway

After a bout with strep, a visit from a cherished friend, a 1 on 1 Tong Ren session, an acupuncture treatment, some long heart to hearts, and lots of TLC, Jessica's platelets were up to 82 today! As I write this she is undergoing Round 16. The plan is to do one more round after this one without the Oxaliplatin and then do another PET scan in mid April. If all goes well, the Doctor discussed the possibility of doing radiosurgery on the remaining nodule in the lung. After 10 long months, this is the first time the possibility of surgery was even discussed! So just like "BOPPO" Jess continues to bounce back! Heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your continued prayers and support!!!

Jess's Consult at Dana Farber

Things went well in Boston. We were given information on various drug/chemo treatments and advised when and why they may be viable options in the future. Dr. Bhargava didn't see uptake in the tumor in the lung so we will discuss that with the team in Portsmouth at her next appointment. We have asked the radiologist for a more explicit written report for Jessica's last PET/CT Scan and she will have additional scans done in mid-April.

She picked up on something very interesting while we were there. She asked several questions regarding health/holistic options, i.e. diet, herbs, naturopathic medicine, and was repeatedly given the answer "not enough studies have been done on the subject to give a clear answer." There was, however, a wealth of information for every drug question she asked. It just shows you that the focus of research is totally on the money makers ~ DRUGS!

When you embark on this journey and begin researching various options, it is scary how little in depth research is being done to determine the effects of what we eat, how we think and what alternative measures we take has on our health. Jess has always favored the blending of treatment approaches, eastern/western and holistic/scientific come together. She will be exploring the possibility of combining naturopathic medicine with her chemo.

Rough Round but Jess is like BOPPO the Clown!

When Jessica and her sister Shannon were little, they had a blow up clown they played with named BOPPO. BOPPO was very resilient and no matter how hard you hit him he would still bounce back for more. Well Jess took some hard hits with Round 15, her platelets were very low to start with and chemotherapy knocks them down even lower. Right now she is exhausted, BUT just like BOPPO, I know she will bounce right back, and with a big beautiful smile on her face she'll exclaim, 'Nothing can knock me down!" So keep her in your thoughts and stay tuned for more adventures of the invincible BOPPO in our next episode "BOPPO goes to BOSTON!"

Round 15 is underway and Jess continues the fight!

Today begins round 15 and as I write this, Jess is at the Oncology Clinic hooked up to her chemo. She just had a reflexology treatment and is now relaxing with a Reiki session. They certainly treat the patients well here at Portsmouth Regional Hospital! We are a bit concerned as her platelets were only 65,000 today (a drop of 25,000). They are doing treatment despite the low count, but we will need to watch closely this week for bleeding, bruising etc. She looks and feels great as you can see and is anxious to get to Dana Farber on the 17th. May the luck of the Irish be shining on her!

Round 14

Round 14 is over and Jessica's platelets are up by 10,000, however, they are still 10,000 shy of adding the Oxalliplatin back into the protocol. BUT HEY, that is a pretty amazing jump in one week. She read a study about Melatonin raising the platelets, so she has been taking that along with some Chinese herbs when she is off-cycle and they appear to be doing the trick!
She was disconnected from the pump Friday and is feeling a bit better now. We have been without power for 4 days and I am so thankful we had a generator installed this fall. Not having heat, or lights would really stink about now. She is back to her bright and beautiful self as evidenced in the recent picture!

Round 13 down ~ Round 14 around the corner ~

Jess is rebounding from her last round of chemotherapy and gearing up for Round 14. Her next treatment begins on Wednesday the 24th. I think the break in treatment because of the low platelets allowed her to forget just how difficult treatment can be. It's a rough cycle, no sooner does her strength, appetite etc come back and she gets hit with another round. God Bless her though, how she remains in such good spirits and such a joy to be around is truly humbling to those of us that see her on a daily basis.

She goes to Dana Farber for a consultation on March 17th (may the luck of the Irish be shining upon her!).

New and Improved "Jessica version 35"

Jessica had a wonderful birthday and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of cards, calls, messages, flowers, gifts and well wishes for her 35th birthday. She had a relaxing day at the spa followed by a lovely dinner at Cava, a Tapas Restaurant in Portsmouth. She is so grateful to everyone for their kindness, generosity and support. It made her birthday very special.

All of the well wishes and relaxation put her in a good frame of mind to resume treatment today. She reached "max saturation" on one of the medicines (oxaliplatin) which is what has been causing the drop in her platelets, so that medication was removed from her protocol for now. She went 12 rounds with it, several of which were at a higher than normal dosage. Most people can only tolerate 4-6 rounds. She is a tough cookie with a soft heart!

Treatment Starting Up Again!

Jessica's Doctor consulted with Dana Farber Hospital and they decided to resume her treatment with some "modifications" to work around the platelet issue. She can begin early next week, but since it is her birthday on Tuesday she will celebrate in style and resume her treatments on Wednesday the 10th. Thanks to all of you for your continued support! It is during times like these that true friends shine like stars.

Low Platelets - No Treatment This Week

Jess's platelets, although higher than last week, were still too low for a treatment. We did, however, get further clarification that the PET Scan showed the lesions in the Liver are dead cells. This is phenomenal news!
Her Doctor is going to reach out to an Oncologist at Dana Farber in Boston as to what the next steps should be and we will go there for a consultation.
Jess is an amazing young woman and she has come so far on this healing journey. I am so proud of her strength, will power and drive. I know that she will beat this!

Great News!!

Well we just got home from the Oncologists' office and even though Jessicas' platelets are too low to have a treatment, the news was TERRIFIC!! The PET scan showed that she now has only one nodule in her left lung. Previously there was a total of four, three in one lung and one in the other. Additionally her liver is showing signs of improvement as well! This is great news! Her relief is visible to say the least. She is so thankful for all the prayers and positive thoughts that everyone has been sending her way. The combination of a very POSITIVE ATTITUDE, Eastern and Western treatments and PRAYER seems to be right on target. Let the healing continue!!

Happy New Year - Round 12 is On!

The holidays were great! It was the ideal time for a "Chemo Break" but now that the New Year is approaching the fight is back on. Jessica's platelets were still low, but her Doctor thought that after a 7 week break it is best to continue with her treatments. The good news is that even with a break, her CEA went down from 9.0 to 7.3 and we are looking forward to continued improvement in 2010. She has a PET Scan scheduled for January 14th so please keep her in your prayers.

I wanted to post a meaningful message for the New Year and came across two that I found especially beautiful and I'd like to share them along with our wishes for a HEALTHY, HAPPY and JOYFUL New Year!

Chemo Free Christmas!

Sometimes the universe creates serendipitous synchronicities. Jessica is looking and feeling wonderful, but her platelets are still too low for chemo. So, she will be taking a break until 12/28. This is really a blessing in disguise ~ she will have a chemo free Christmas! Her appetite is good, her energy level is up and she is looking forward to a Happy Holiday. Her sister and brother and coming up and we will celebrate in style.

You have no idea how much your love and support have buoyed our spirits over the past months and we would like to wish each and every one of you a Christmas filled with joy, blessed with health, and graced by the company and love of family and friends. God Bless and Merry Christmas!!

Chemo still on hold but no Oral Surgery!!

Jess went for a blood test today and her platelets are only 1K shy of being high enough for a treatment. She will go for another blood draw on Wednesday and if they are high enough she will hopefully have her next treatment then. She went to the oral surgeon today and was very relieved to hear that she doesn't have to have her wisdom teeth out just yet. There is no infection. The doctor says she takes impeccable care of her teeth and they will continue to monitor them until she completes her chemo and revisit it then. Her spirits are high and she is looking forward to the Holidays!!

Round 12 on hold

Well, I guess some days are better than others. Jessica could not get a chemo treatment yesterday because her platelet count was too low. On a good note she is going to take a “chemo break” for a few weeks; on the down side, she went to the dentist for a cleaning last week and was told she has two impacted wisdom teeth that need to come out. One is causing an infection, something she needs avoid at all costs. So… at this point the game plan is for her to have oral surgery next week to them taken out.

God bless her though, she looks as beautiful as ever and is in great spirits. We had an absolutely wonderful Thanksgiving. Shannon, her sister, came home and we went out for a wonderful Thanksgiving feast. I made a turkey breast, and sides the day before so also had the traditional holiday leftovers to pick at over the weekend. The visit with her sister was great. They had a manicure, pedicure and tea at a spa and we all had a nice lunch out before she left. Shannon beat the pants off of both of us at Dominoes but even with the tiles stacked against her she looks and feels great!

Happy Thanksgiving – There are so many things I am immensely grateful for, but I am especially grateful to everyone who is supporting Jessica on her journey, a journey that is as spiritual as it is physical.

She and I have been participating in the “Oneness Experiment” and are learning to embrace every moment, every situation and every person, without rejection or preference. We are learning to welcome even the things that feel difficult because on the other side of discomfort is transformation. Her diagnosis is like the sand that irritates the oyster in order to create a pearl, or the heat that turns coal into diamonds, or the cocoon that allows the caterpillar to transform into a beautiful butterfly. I am witnessing a miraculous transformation in her and it is a transformation fueled by love ~ the love of friends, family, and even total strangers! So, if you are reading this blog I would like to tell you that I am eternally gratefully for everything and everyone, especially YOU!

Round 11 - Single Digit CEA!

Jessica began Round 11 today. 11 seems to be her divine/lucky number. It has become a running joke how often we both see the number 11 or 11:11. Actually our house number is 11, so this must be where she is meant to heal. Today when we got her blood results her CEA dropped more than 3 points and is now 8.7!! I pretended that I couldn't read the results and asked her to so I could watch her face; she was smiling from ear to ear! She will go back for hydration tomorrow (11/11) and stay on the pump until Thursday afternoon. Her spirits are wonderful, she looks great and she's doing everything in her power to get better. The prayers are working so keep 'em coming. You are all in our prayers as well. Thank you and God Bless!

Results are mostly positive

Well we met with Dr. Poulin today and the news was mixed. On the positive side, the rectal tumor is gone and they could not find any cancer cells in the rectum. They did a biopsy but there was not enough affected tissue to even get a sample for genetic testing.

They wanted the sample to do genetic testing to see if Jessica is a viable candidate for a biologic chemo drug called Erbitux. The reason they are looking into this is that, the liver and lungs remain unchanged, but on the plus side they haven't increased! There is still work to be done. Jess will continue 4-6 more rounds of chemo and then they will repeat the scans. She will likely have to have a liver biopsy done to see if she is a candidate for the Erbitux. That timeframe has not yet been determined.

We are happy that the primary tumor is gone but of course we were hoping that there would have been further reduction in the liver and lungs. Her CEA is up to 11.8, however, the doctor wasn't concerned. She continues to look and feel good and to approach this situation from all directions Medical/Spiritual and Western/Eastern.... We are waiting for her physical body that is bound by the constraints of time and space to catch up to her spiritual body which is already PERFECT!!! All things in due time.

Jessica is in the midst of her 10th and final round of this treatment plan and she is doing phenomenal. Her CEA dropped again from 10.6 to 10.2

The blend of Eastern/Western medicine is working well. She has actually gained weight during chemo and looks beautiful. As soon as she fully recovers from this round we will all go to one her favorite places, a tapas restaurant in Portsmouth called Kava, for a celebratory dinner. It is very important to celebrate victories along the way and this is a special one. She and I will also be heading down to Quincy Ma. on Nov. 1st and Nov. 8th for Tong Ren classes. We are really looking forward to it.

A CAT Scan is scheduled for 10/30 and a Sigmoidoscopy on 11/3 followed by consultation with her Oncologist on 11/5. Please continue to send healing energies and prayers her way. We are sending love and thanks out to all of you!

Jessica is in the middle of her 9th round of chemo. She is doing very well and holding her own. We went back to the hospital today and they gave her IV hydration and anti-nausea medicine and it is really helping her. Her spirits are good and her appetite and energy are better than they have been during prior treatments. After she has her 10th round they will repeat the scans and do a sigmoidoscopy, so we will know more then. Thanks to everyone for your continued prayers and positive energy, it is really helping!!

Well today we got a mixture of news, some good, and some requiring "a tweak" in the treatment plan. We were able to get further information on Jessica's scans. The rectal tumor could not even be detected in the CAT scan!!! It went from 4.5 cm by 1.5 cm to not even being seen on a SCAN! The lungs decreased, as previously reported, by 30- 40%. The liver, however, has not responded as well yet and showed a slight increase. Dr. Poulin is increasing 2 components of her chemotherapy. He will do it in stages increasing one medication today and a another on her next treatment so that he can monitor her reactions.

BUT the disappearance of the rectal tumor is phenomenal news!

The cumulative treatments are starting to kick up the side effects a notch, but Jess is a very good patient and complains very little. They are giving her some additional nausea medications today and warned her about a possible increase in the neuropathy. Since treatment began, she cannot touch hot or cold items, or drink or eat hot or cold foods for 4-5 days. We have worked out a system so she can avoid both. All in all we are thrilled for the great news on the "disappearance" of the primary tumor! Thank you GOD!!

Well, more good news today! Jess just began her 7th round of chemotherapy and her CEA Protein level is down from 12 to 10.8! She looks great! As a matter of fact, there was a young man who brought his father to chemotherapy and he was hitting on her all day. When you get hit on in chemotherapy you know you look good! She will be on the chemo pump until Saturday afternoon, but I can say with confidence that I know she's up to it!!

We just got back from the Doctor and are thrilled to report that Jessica is responding well to treatment. The CAT scan shows 30-40% shrinkage. She will continue on with 4 more rounds and then they will do scans again.

Thanks to everyone for all their prayers, cards, messages, gifts and well wishes. The combination of prayers from people of varied faiths, religions and spiritual beliefs have apparently been heard and answered!

Tomorrow we will go to Haverhill MA for a Tong Ren Healing session. The fight is still on, but good news like this is restorative to the body, mind and spirit and helps Jessica to rally the strength to fight even harder.

Ok, Jess is more than halfway through the suggested 10 rounds of chemotherapy and the score is:

Jess is really working on this, and she is nothing short of remarkable. This is, however, an anxiety producing week. The girl has the right idea though, she keeps busy, stays positive and examines her fears then blesses them away so they can be replaced with courage, love and healing energy. She is not taking this journey lightly!

In addition to the Cat Scans, so far this week she has done 2 acupuncture sessions, a watercolor class, several "remote" Tong Ren healing sessions, counseling, and tomorrow is reflexology. Oh, and in between she is forcing in the liquids, the calories, the proteins, and exercising when she is strong enough to do so. All I can say is "God love her." I know I sure do!

Her results will be read on Friday so PLEASE put "light and love" around that situation.

My daughter Shannon, Jessica's younger sister (in this picture), also needs to be tested for this "condition." She has just joined the staff at Denver Children's Hospital as a Psychologist and as soon as her insurance kicks in she will be going for testing also. So please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as well. She has been a Godsend through this whole thing and we pray the light of love and health around her also. Love you Shannie!!!

More good news, Jessica's CEA Protein went down again, this time from 15.6 to 12.8 in just 2 weeks. This round she had her sister Shannon here with her on the day she

got "unhooked." The first few days after treatment are the roughest, but having Shannon here provided a lift. They are 2 years apart and extremely close. Shannon has been a rock through this whole thing. She has her Ph.D in Psychology so we are lucky to have our own "resident counselor." Jessica's next treatment is August 27 - 29th and her scans are scheduled for September 2nd. She has an appointment to get the results on Sept. 4th. In the interim we heard about an eastern practitioner in MA. who works with energy. Harvard and Dana Farber have done studies on his work which has impressive results. Jessica begins Round 5 today and ready for a good bout. She has been exercising, mediating, doing acupuncture & reflexology, seeing a counselor AND she has also met a woman in town who is giving her watercolor lessons! How therapeutic is that?? Her first watercolor is pictured in this post. By following both Eastern and Western methodologies and philosophies, she has all her bases covered! Her spirits are great and we are awaiting the manifestation of her miracle.

Thanks to everyone who continually remembers her with cards, gifts, and emails. She has been reading everything she can on the Mind/Body/Spirit connection. Deepak Chopra (a friend of hers call him Tupak - LOL) is her favorite and she is also reading and following exercises from the book 9 Steps for Reversing or Preventing Cancer and Other Diseases by Shivani Goodman, Ed.D.

I feel privileged to share in her spiritual journey. The sound of her laughter fills the house and her love permeates our hearts. With her determination and the love and support of family and friends she is bound to beat this diagnosis.

"Baby Jess" - Round 4

"Baby Jess" - as her friends at AT&T affectionately know her, has finished round 4 of her treatments. She remains in the lead with a score of:

The current plan is 10 rounds of chemotherapy with scans being done after round 6, so she is almost 1/2 thru this treatment plan. She handles her treatments very well. She is a bit queasy this time (she has medication for this), but the worst side effect is the exhaustion that comes over her. She will be laying low for the next few days as she recuperates, but if you know Jess you know that she'll still be smiling.

All things considered though, she is the "best patient" I have ever seen and we could all learn a few things from her about attitude and inner strength. With all that she is going through she is still a joy to be around. Her laughter fills the room and her smile brightens our day. She is so positive and inquisitive. She is voraciously reading all she can on the Mind/Body/Spirit connection and she is really taking an active part in her healing.

When I hear people complain about little every day annoyances, I look at her and think, "Don't sweat the small stuff." Life is too precious to waste on gossip, pettiness and complaining. She is on a very rough road but she is turning the climb into an adventure. I learn something from her everyday and I love her more each moment.

Again, very special and heartfelt thanks to all of you. Your support means more than I can say. You lift our spirits and bless our hearts every day with your outpouring of love!

Round 4 Began - Good News on Blood Tests!

Round 4 began yesterday and we got some good news from the doctor...YIPPEEE!

There is a protein (CEA protein) that is produced by Jess's type of cancer. Dr. Poulin, Jessica's doctor, told us yesterday that her level went from 20 to 15. The downward movement of this level is what we want to see. I don't pretend to be an expert in this area, so I always get copies of the blood tests and then I ask the nurses for further input on how to interpret the results. They were very happy to see that the level went down 5 points in one month! Every little sign along the way that is pointing in the right direction is so uplifting!

We returned home and Jess will be on the pump until 1:15 Saturday. Again, she prepared by having acupuncture before her treatment and at the Oncology Center (pictured in this post),they have a massage therapist that gives patients and caregivers massages or reflexology treatments. It's great! Jessica got a reflexology treatment and she is likely to add additional sessions of reflexology to her bag of "healing tools" going forward.

We are learning that each round seems to be slightly different than the previous one, so we are vigilant about watching for any changes and/or side effects. For the most part though, it seems that the "real" dragged out tired feelings" come toward the end of the 48 hour period and continue for about 2 days until she gradually rebuilds her strength, but for now the good news about the blood results has really buoyed her spirits!

Mid-Cycle

It's mid-cycle and Jessica's energy is building back up. The treatments knock the heck out of her and she lays low (literally) for a few days afterwards as she gradually rebuilds her strength.

Healing takes a lot of work, physically, mentally and spiritually. The connection between mind, body and spirit is so real and so important to pay attention to.

Jessica is remarkably strong in all those areas, but believe me she works on it! She forces herself to eat several small meals a day and naps after each one. She is very conscious of staying hydrated and always has juice, water or iced tea at hand. She reads inspirational books, blogs etc and is always trying to find out what her bigger purpose is in this whole thing and in life in general.

Being positive is great, but we cannot do so at the cost of burying our feelings, fears and concerns. For that reason, I am so glad that she began counseling. She found a Psychologist that seems to be a good fit for her and she sees him once a week. I have begun counseling as well. We both feel it is important to have an unbiased person to help us wade through the myriad of feelings that come with this kind of diagnosis. Doing so helps to feel the feelings, address them, explore them and move on rather than just denying them and keeping things bottled up.

With that said, you will notice that I used the word "diagnosis.” That is how Jessica continues to treat this. She will not allow herself to fall victim, or to be a martyr, and she uses every tool at hand to find reasons to be positive and thankful at the end of each day. I love that about her!

No fevers this time, just some annoying itching as a side effect. The doctor said to take Benedryl through tomorrow. She wasn't as tired this time either. Chemo is a strange thing. Reactions seem to vary from cycle to cycle with highs and lows and a variety of side effects. Overall though, Jess is doing quite well and has won yet another round in the battle.

Round 3 underway

It's 3pm and Jessica and I are still at the Chemo Center. We have been here since 8:30. In just a bit they will be done administering the the mix of medications and then hook her up to the pump with 5FU until Saturday. Right now, she is listening to a meditation on the iPod and has slipped off into sleep.

Her doctor is pleased with her progress. We told him that she gets fevers the second night of treatment and he seemed intrigued. He said that is not the norm, since her white blood count would still be good. He said that the chemo is killing the cancer which is releasing poisons into her body and likely causing the fever. Of course, we loved the words "the chemo is killing the cancer!" I think we will both take the fever as a good sign if it happens again tomorrow night!

Round 3 approaches

Well Jess is rapidly approaching Round 3. She met with a counselor today and really likes him. She has been through so much lately that the professional guidance is really helpful. He told her of a family member that was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer while she was pregnant. It had metastasized to the liver and lungs. Well, she is doing well today and the baby she was carrying is now 20 years old...don't you just love those success stories. She also goes for an acupuncture session tomorrow to prepare for the healing.

As you would expect of Jess, she did well with her second treatment. She is such a trooper. They added an additional medicine this time and she tolerated it well. After about 30 hours of chemo she started fighting a fever and as with the first treatment she became VERY tired the day the pump came out (July 4th). That day was pretty much lost to sleep.

Luckily though, the Portsmouth NH fireworks, which were scheduled for July 3rd, were cancelled due to rain and the rain date was July 5th. By the evening of the 5th, she had bit more energy and was able to go... and she thoroughly enjoyed them. As you all know, nothing can keep her down!

Round 2

Well, Round 2 began today and Jessica went into it strong and prepared to emerge victorious. She has been grazing throughout the day and eating several small meals to bulk up for the fight and she has actually put on 2 pounds!

In light of all that has been thrown at her in such a short time, she remains remarkably upbeat. Comedies are her movies and shows of choice these days and laughter has definitely proven to be good medicine.

Speaking of medicine, several people have asked what they are treating her with. The chemo she is receiving is administered for 48 hours straight every 2 weeks. So she has 2 days on and 12 days off. We go to the Oncology Center for about 7 hours so she can receive her "chemo cocktail" which is a mixture of Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin), Leucovorin, Avastin and Fluorouracil (5FU) and then she goes home with a pump that continues to administer the Fluororacil (5FU).

There is another medication they are considering using in the future called Erbitux. The decision will be based on genetic testing. I'd also like to thank everyone that has sent info regarding clinical trials. We are looking into them, however the doctors want to measure her progress on the current protocol first.

Well, now that science class is over, I will close by saying that Jessica is going into Round 2 with continued optimism, a positive attitude and her big bright smile. Thanks to each and every one of you for your continued prayers, support and love!

Whenever she and I talk about her job (and we do often since I am former Bellhead) she refers to all her friends and coworkers very fondly and now I see why. Your kindness and generosity is exceeded only by your spirit of giving! Thanks for helping to keep that beautiful smile on her face. Between Treatments

The "in between" times (between treatments) for Jess get better by the day. She is eating more, catching up on reading and feeling stronger in general. It is great to hear her laugh when she comes across a funny passage...she is reading "Crazy Sexy Cancer" right now and seems to be enjoying it.

Now if the weather would cooperate and the sun would stay out, we could get out a bit and relax on the patio by the pond. They say the weekend should be nice and we are looking forward to it. I don't think either of us would fare well in Seattle, we both find the sun to be very therapeutic! Well we hope the sun is shining on you!

As I write this, I can hear Jessica upstairs sniffling and blowing her nose. She is reading the hundreds of cards that keep coming in and she is overwhelmed with the outpouring of affection, love and support being showered on her.

Love has such healing and restorative powers and tears of joy and thanks are so cleansing. I have no doubt that reading all the wonderful messages will prove to be a crucial part of healing. I tell her to let the love and light pour through her as she reads the beautiful, thoughtful and sometimes very funny messages.

We are on a rural mail route but our mail can no longer fit in our mailbox. Our mailman has taken to delivering the mail to the door in the US mail baskets! I tell Jess, "your fan mail is here." We will have to be sure to take care of the mailman this Christmas!

Seeing this overwhelming support makes me realize now just how many lives she truly has touched and as her mother I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are wonderful coaches and cheerleaders. God Bless All of You!!

Round 1 is over. The visiting nurse just unhooked Jess from the chemo pump and the score is:

She did very well! She is such a trooper. Stoic is the word I keep using. She never complains, always smiles and is a pleasure to have around. Her side effects have been minimal but today she is VERY TIRED. It takes a lot of energy to beat the "C" diagnosis

We have to watch her temperature and make sure she keeps drinking to stay hydrated. She had a 101 temperature last night and we were told 100.5 and over to call the doctor and/or go to the ER. After speaking with the Doctor, we decided to treat it at home and continue to monitor it. I will need to be the ogre that continually wakes her today to make her drink her water and ensure, but as you would expect of Jess, she is the "model patient"

24 hours into chemo and doing great!

Jessica has completed 24 of her 48 hours of chemo and is doing great! Her blood pressure is actually going down from the previous highs (probably from being anxious). She is not nauseous and has an appetite. She had pancakes for breakfast and is really doing well, except for the "chemo farts" quite potent LOL!!! We laugh that means that meansthe garbage is leaving her body!!

Some of you may already know this and for others it is the first time you are hearing it. My beautiful, 34 year old daughter Jessica has recently been diagnosed with Stage Four Cancer. She possesses an amazingly positive attitude, great spiritual strength, and will of iron. Right now she is gearing up for the fight of her life.

She wants and needs to remain upbeat and to face this insidious diagnosis like the true warrior she is. I so appreciate all the prayers, positive thoughts, cards, letters, etc that have been pouring in, but with all that is going on, it is very difficult to respond to everyone in a timely manner.
